The beaches
Antigua's coastline mixes calm Caribbean coves on the west with wilder Atlantic shores on the east. These are the ones we send guests to most.
Dickenson Bay
The north-west coast's liveliest stretch — soft white sand, calm swimming water, beach bars and water sports. The easiest 'big beach day' from JPA Complex.
Runaway Bay
Just south of Dickenson Bay, a long, quieter curve of sand that's ideal for morning walks and a peaceful swim.
Jolly Beach
A mile of powdery sand on the west coast with gentle turquoise water — great for families and sunset watching.
Darkwood Beach
Laid-back south-west beach with clear water and views across to Montserrat on a good day.
Valley Church Beach
A local favourite near Jolly Harbour — calm seas, shade from sea-grape trees and a classic beach bar.
Half Moon Bay
A wild, beautiful crescent on the Atlantic side. Dramatic scenery, a protected cove for swimming at one end and body-surfing waves at the other.
History & sights
Three centuries of stories
Antigua's past is written into its harbours, forts and sugar estates. Most of the big sights are an easy half-day from Bellevue Estate.
Nelson's Dockyard
A UNESCO World Heritage Site in English Harbour — the world's only continuously working Georgian-era dockyard, with restored 18th-century buildings, a museum and a marina full of yachts.
Shirley Heights
The hilltop lookout above English Harbour with the island's most famous sunset view. On Sundays the lookout hosts a long-running barbecue party with live steel pan and reggae.
Devil's Bridge
A natural limestone arch carved by Atlantic waves on the east coast, inside a small national park. Impressive blowholes and rugged coastal scenery.
St. John's
The capital — visit the twin-towered cathedral, browse the public market for local produce and spices, and walk the colourful streets around Heritage Quay.
Betty's Hope
Antigua's first large sugar plantation, now an open-air heritage site with restored windmill towers — a window into the island's past.

Eat like an Antiguan
Some of the best food on the island comes off roadside grills — smoky barbecue chicken and fresh-caught fish with fungi (a cornmeal staple) and pepperpot, Antigua's national dish. Look for ducana, a sweet grated-sweet-potato dumpling, and black pineapple, the island's famously sweet local variety.
Sundays mean barbecue: grills appear along the roads all over the island, and the Shirley Heights party pairs dinner with the best sunset view in the Caribbean.
Cooking in? Every JPA Complex room has a full kitchen — pick up produce at the St. John's public market and you've got dinner sorted.
Beyond the beach
Day trips
Barbuda
Antigua's sister island is reachable by ferry or catamaran from St. John's. Think pink-sand beaches, the frigate bird sanctuary and near-empty coastline.
Island circumnavigation by boat
Full-day catamaran and sailing tours circle the island, with snorkeling stops, lunch on board and swim breaks at beaches only reachable from the water.
Stingray City
A well-known east-coast excursion where you wade on a shallow sandbank and snorkel among gentle southern stingrays.
Rainforest zip-line
A canopy course in Antigua's south-west rainforest — a fun half-day for anyone who wants a break from the beach.

Practical tips
Currency
The Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC$) is official; US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. Small bills are handy for beach bars and roadside grills.
Getting around
Antiguans drive on the left. A rental car gives you the most freedom; taxis are plentiful and most tours include pick-up.
Sunday rhythm
Sunday is quiet island-wide — many shops close, and the social centre of gravity shifts to beach barbecues and the Shirley Heights party.
Sun & sea
The trade winds keep things breezy but the sun is strong year-round. Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat are essential.
